The Process
We wanted the Modena to have a truthful feel to it, like a model that had existed in days gone by and had recently been brought back to life. Pantofola d’Oro has a rich history in football, and with Italy being a proper football nation, it made sense to connect the shoe to their heritage in manufacturing football boots. The idea for the upper was to mimic the classic black boot of the 80’s with its distinctive side stripe, heel tab, and bouncing ball logo.
Over the years, we have worked on various footwear projects, from selecting colours and materials, to applying themes and concepts, but this is the first time we have designed, collaborated, and made a shoe from the ground up.
The Modena took a number of proto rounds and various corrections, but the most impactful development was when we butchered the last sample. We wanted to take a little volume off the top to create a sharper more refined look, so cut the entire upper from the outsole and skimmed approximately 5mm off the bottom of the material. To give the shoe a cleaner profile, we stripped the lace stay and moved it down by one lace hole, thus opening up the length of the collar, which we dropped by around 15mm.
We now had a visual in 3-dimensional form that we could go back to the factory to re-last and produce a final prototype. The result is as close to the cut-up version of the Modena and the shoe we imagined at its inception.
